Boosting Your Dog’s Immunity

We all know how important it is to ensure that our pets receive good nutrition by providing a quality dog food. While most commercially available pet foods, especially if they are labeled as “Complete and Balanced,” provide a good source of basic nutrition, they are far from the natural diet of raw foods that a dog’s body has evolved to consume (modern pet foods have only been fed to dogs since the 1950’s). Commercial pet foods are also cooked at very high temperatures and go through a sterilization process to kill any bacteria and contaminants present in them. While this is good for food safety, it also kills the “good” bacteria in pet food that aids in digestion and, more importantly, immunity.

While our blog’s mascot is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, these tips apply for any breed.

Probiotics (the good bacteria that lives in our gastrointestinal tract) have been well researched in both humans and dogs and their health benefits throughout the body are truly overwhelming. This is especially the case in terms of immunity. In fact, maintaining a healthy GI tract is responsible for 70% of the body’s immunity! So, one of the easiest ways to ensure a healthy pet is to ensure that they are regularly consuming “good bacteria” to support their digestive system. The easiest way to do this is with a supplemental probiotic available online or at the pet store.

We have found that all probiotics are not the same, so there are a couple of things to look for to ensure that the supplement is both safe for your pet and effective:

  • Be sure that the supplement is both a pre and probiotic. The prebiotic is food for the probiotic and ensures that the probiotic bacteria are able to survive while the product is on the shelf.
  • Ensure that the product contains a source of live (viable) naturally occurring microorganisms.
  • The supplement should be formulated by a veterinarian, you don’t want to be giving your dog a product made for humans or another species, but specifically for dogs.
  • The company making the product should be certified by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) and use Certified Good Manufacturing Practices to make sure that the product is of high quality and safe for your pet.

One probiotic that we have found to exceed all of these requirements (and that dogs love) is the Digestion Pre & Probiotic Soft Chews by Primo Pup. They can be purchased at Primo Pup.  Of course, Primo Pup is one of our favorite manufacturers of other dog health products as well. They are a really honest company that makes great, high quality supplements.
