Tips on Finding Trusted Pet Care While on Vacation

As a pet owner, going on vacation can be bittersweet. Although you probably can’t wait to get out of the house and enjoy new experiences again, hitting the open road (or air) often means leaving your furry friend behind.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ll be gone for a few days or a few weeks—you’re bound to miss their morning snuggles and playful energy during your travels.

Missing your pet while on vacation is a given—but feeling anxious about their pet care is not. These days, there are plenty of trusted pet care options that promise to keep your pet happy and comfortable while you’re away from home. And as any experienced pet owner knows, vacations are a MILLION times more enjoyable when you know that your four-legged friend is in good hands. With that in mind, we’re going to share a few of our best tips for finding pet care that you can trust with your furry friend. Trust us, getting regular picture updates of your cat lounging in the sun or your pup happily gnawing on dog chews is so much better than constantly worrying about them on your trip!

Popular Options for Pet Care

Before we get too deep into our pet care tips, let’s quickly go over your options for pet care:

  • Pet Boarding Facility: Also known as kenneling (in the case of dogs, anyway), pet boarding facilities are some of the more convenient pet care options for pet parents. These facilities offer to watch your pet inside their facility, which many pet owners prefer since it eliminates the need for a stranger to come into their home. Dogs and cats typically have their own kennels and are carefully monitored by trained professionals.
  • Pet Hotel/Resort: If you want your furry friend to have a good time while you’re on vacation, consider checking them into a pet hotel or pet resort. On top of standard pet care services, these upscale facilities offer additional pet perks such as grooming services, private suites, and large play areas. In fact, some luxury pet hotels offer high-end pet care packages that come with chef-prepared meals, plush beds, and flat-screen televisions!
  • Pet-Sitting Apps: Can’t afford a posh pet hotel for Fido? Fret not, because that’s where pet-sitting apps come in handy. Pet-sitting apps have exploded in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why: These modern-day apps offer both in-home and out-of-home pet sitting at varying rates, giving pet owners peace of mind while also keeping their bank accounts happy. However, keep in mind that you’ll want to be extra careful with your choice of pet sitter since you could be giving them access to your home.

Tips on Finding Trusted Pet Care

Finding the right pet sitter for your four-legged companion doesn’t need to be stressful! Here are a few pointers on how to find the right fit:

  • Start your search early. Seriously, don’t dawdle on this! Once you know you’re going on a trip, start searching for someone ASAP. This is especially important if you have a pet with special needs or requirements. The earlier you start your search, the more time you have to screen potential pet sitters and find the oh-so perfect fit. Ultimately, that means less stress for you and your pet.
  • Book an appointment with your veterinarian. Most pet-boarding facilities require that pets be up-to-date on vaccinations before they board, so why not schedule an appointment with your veterinarian and get those out of the way? While you’re there, you can ask your vet if they have any recommendations for pet-boarding facilities in your area. Veterinarian clinics are a great source of information since they meet with a lot of pet owner
  • Ask your friends and family. Online reviews can be helpful for finding pet-boarding facilities, but recommendations from people you know and trust is even better. However, keep in mind that your friends and family may have different needs in a pet sitter than you do. Consider meeting with multiple pet sitters before you make a decision.
  • Meet with potential pet sitters. If you’re thinking about using a pet care app, be sure to schedule a meet and greet with your candidates. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce yourself and your pet to a potential pet sitter and get to know them better. If your pet tends to get nervous around strangers, create a positive association by giving the pet sitter a tasty chew to give your pet. You can’t go wrong with marrow bones for dogs and catnip for nervous kitties. Don’t forget to prepare questions such as: How much experience do you have? What is your availability like around the holidays and summertime? Do you have any questions for me?
  • Take a tour of the facility. If you’re doing out-of-home pet care, arrange a visit to the boarding facility. Boarding facilities that don’t allow tours or visits are a red flag, so consider looking elsewhere if your request is denied. When touring a pet-boarding facility, keep an eye out for clean and comfortable spaces. Also, ask the staff members lots of questions. Where does your pet sleep at night? How much exercise will they get? How many pets will they care for at one time?
  • Consider a trial run. Before your vacation, consider testing the waters by arranging a short stay for your pet. If you’re dropping your pet off at a boarding facility, book an overnight stay for your pet and ask the staff how they did. For in-home pet sitting, consider having your pet-sitter watch your dog or cat for the entire day.

Setting Your Pet Up for a Positive Experience

Leaving your pet to go on vacation is always heart-wrenching, but it’s especially difficult the first time since you don’t know what to expect.

With these tips, you can find the right pet care for your pet and rest easy knowing that your furry friend is in good hands.
