The method of grading dog breeds according to their intelligence is a complex process. One might think that a dog is only intelligent as the willingness of his owners to put time and effort in training him, but there are certain inherent qualities in some breeds.
Dog trainers are convinced that any dog can learn commands, but the key factor is knowing what your fluffy friend is built for and motivate him appropriately.
Herders, hunters, and retrievers will want to please you so it’s more likely that they will learn faster. Livestock guards are a bit more distracted, but that’s their true nature. We will mention the smartest dog breeds considering their performance on obedience/working tests.

What is the Smartest Dog Breed?
While our blog’s mascot is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, these tips apply for any breed.
There are plenty of ways to test puppy intelligence — psychologists and animal behaviorists have been looking for standardized tests for decades — because there are many different types of ways for man’s best friend to be intelligent.
In this sense, dogs are a lot like humans. Maybe you’re more book smart than street smart. Maybe you’re a math whiz, but not so canny when it comes to reading comprehension. We’re complex, we contain multitudes and we’re not good at everything.
Border Collie
Border Collies often get the title of smartest dog. They are the real workaholics amongst dogs. They are praised for their amazing working abilities, intelligence, and out-of-this-world instincts. Plus they are super cute and make one of the most perfect pets one can imagine.
Smartest Large Dog Breeds
German Shepherd
German Shepherds are natural herders, but they are rarely used as ones. Their mental qualities are more often being used in military and police and they make the single most favorite police canine in the world.
Golden Retriever
Golden Retriever is the ultimate competitor for the ‘best family dog’ prize. Whenever someone says ‘good boy’ almost everyone pictures as smiling Retriever. Originally they were bred to be hunting companion, but are rarely used in that way. Goldens really like pleasing their owners and are frequently used as service dogs helping people with various forms of disabilities.
Labrador Retrievers
Labrador is the gentle and equally intelligent cousin of the Golden Retriever. Their sporty and happy nature makes them an ideal family dog. They too are used are service dogs more often than other breeds and you can sometimes spot representatives of the breed helping the police fighting crime.
Rottweiler
Rottweiler’s facial expression is powerful and seemingly angry, along with his robust body appearance. That’s why the police-force loves training and using them in their operations. But Rottweilers have much more to it. They are happiest when they are given a task and are widely used as service dogs, therapy dogs, and sometimes even herders.
Australian Cattle Dog
They are energetic, dynamic and highly intelligent. You will find them enjoying performing everyday herding and obedience tasks.
Smartest Small Dogs
Poodle
Would you believe that poodles are wild animals? Well believe it, because they are simply too smart to be pets and are thus obviously out of the question.
Exceptionally smart and active. Bred to retrieve things from the water. The miniature variety may have been used for truffle hunting.
Shetland Sheepdog
The Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie, is a small to medium sized herding dog that resembles a miniature Collie. They are very active and easy to train. These intelligent dogs excel in various dog sports and are often considered the best agility dog behind the Border Collie.
Papillon
The Papillon is a very small dog that gets its name from its butterfly shaped ears. Despite growing up to reach only 10 pounds maximum, they are an adventurous breed that really isn’t shy at all. They are very intelligent dogs that do well in a variety of dog sports.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a perfect combination of brains and beauty. They tend to be extremely connected to their owners and use their intelligence and beauty to get what they want. As sneaky as they tend to be, their loveable nature makes it hard not to spoil them.
An intelligent breed thinks and acts fast so they don’t always make the best pets. If you left the house you might just find it wrecked because most intelligent dogs start to panic and worry. But in case of Bulldogs, they won’t even notice you were gone for eight consecutive hours. That’s why people are encouraged to choose a dog breed according to their lifestyle and not the dog’s intelligence.
