Grooming your dog is your responsibility, just the same as walking your dog. And while sending your pet to a professional grooming salon once in a while will definitely provide incredible results, it is also important that you take good care of your dog on a regular basis.
While our blog’s mascot is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, these tips apply for any breed. Below, we list out eight dog grooming tips that every pet parent must know and implement.
Brush The Coat Regularly
It is very important that you take good care of the dog’s coat. This can be done by brushing the coat regularly. Doing so will remove all the dirt and dust particles the dog has accumulated on the coat. Without regular brushing, the dirt will stick on to the coat, eventually making the dog look dirty and unclean. It will also negatively affect the quality of the coat. If you find any fleas on the dog, then you should use a flea comb and brush your pet until you are sure that the fleas have been removed. In addition, you can also use PetLock to kill off all the fleas, larvae, and egg on the dog’s coat.
For pet owners who want to go the more natural route for getting rid of fleas, try Biospotix, wondercide, or you can also make your own using lavender and lemons. Essential oils, like lavender and Geraniol, just a couple of drops on the collar or harness have seen good results. Simply google search natural flea/tick sprays and you’ll find lots more to choose from.
If you let the fleas continue to infest the dog, it is possible that the hair will start to fall and the coat will lose its sheen.
Bathe With Shampoo And Conditioner
When you bathe your dog, always use a shampoo and conditioner. However, make sure that you only use a shampoo aimed at dogs. Never use your shampoo on the dog as human shampoo can be incredibly harmful to it. To be safer, consult with your vet and buy a shampoo and conditioner recommended by them. And when applying the shampoo, ensure that you get it into every part of the dog’s body. Just let the shampoo rest for a few minutes before you wash it off. Plus, no trace of the shampoo or conditioner should be left on the dog since it can make the animal feel itchy and result in dry skin.
Brush The Teeth
Some people tend to get their dog’s teeth cleaned only when taking it to a salon. That is not a good way to treat your dog. Just like you brush your teeth every day, it is necessary that the dog’s teeth be cleaned regularly. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it every single day. Instead, ensure that you clean your pet’s teeth at least twice or thrice a week. That should be good enough to keep the teeth in good condition and avoid infections. And just as with shampoo, only use toothpaste that is marketed for the dogs. Never use the toothpaste you daily use since your dog can get sick from it. Now, some people might find cleaning their dog’s teeth a difficult process. In such cases, try using a dental spray. Prevent issues with dog tooth and mouth hygiene products: https://amzn.to/2ryuBJH
Clean The Ears
Many dog parents overlook cleaning the ears of their pet. And this can turn out to be a big mistake since ear infections are one of the most common diseases seen in dogs. Usually caused due to the buildup of bacteria in the ear canal, this can lead to an unpleasant smell emitting from the ears. Your dog may also start walking haphazardly in case the infections affect its sense of balance. This is why it is necessary that you regularly clean your dog’s ears. Buy an ear cleaning solution for dogs, dip a cotton ball into it and wipe the ears of your pet. Make sure not to push in the cotton balls too deep inside the ear.
Take Care Of The Nails
The nails of your dog also need to be trimmed from time to time. However, there is no fixed schedule on when to trim the nails since each dog’s nail growth will be different from one another. While one dog might need the nails to be trimmed once every 2 weeks, another one may only need the trimming done once every 3 or 4 weeks. Observed how fast the nails on your dog grow and set up a schedule accordingly. If you do take your dog regularly to grooming salons, says once every two months, then you only need to trim the ends of the nails.
Remove Eye Boogers
Dogs can discharge a sticky liquid from their eyes every now and then. Called as boogers or goop, they are mostly caused by the dust and dirt entering the eye. When you see it, you should take a wet cloth and wipe out the boogers. This will keep your pet’s eyes from looking gross. However, if there is excessive discharge from the eyes, then you should take the dog to a vet.
