Can CBD be Used in the Treatment of Pets?

Anyone who regularly checks for new or alternative treatment methods for their pets will likely have come across something known as CBD. This substance has taken on a life of its own, growing so much in popularity as more and more folks continue to swear by it.

If there was ever a wonder drug, then this is it. It has practically been credited with efficacy in the treatment of every ailment. While we know that this claim is likely not true, we can also agree that there has to be something about this discovery that is worth closer investigation, especially with all the good that it is touted to offer pets.

What is CBD?

This is a short name for cannabidiol, one of the many cannabinoids that the cannabis plant produces. Its association with this plant is usually what gets a lot of people apprehensive. This apprehension usually stems from the knowledge that cannabis is basically the same as marijuana (pot).

The truth, however, is that though cannabidiol is from the cannabis plant, it has been separated from THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is the compound responsible for the “high” effect that pot is known for. What we are therefore saying is that CBD contains none of the psychoactive properties contained in the marijuana that folks smoke. You can read about it here.

What Can it do for Pets?

So what exactly can this wonder drug do for our dear pets? This is the question we want to quickly address here. Obviously, this drug has impressive medicinal properties for both humans and pets. Though there are still on-going debates and even though organizations like the American Veterinary Medical Association have not openly taken a position on this alternative medication, no one can argue the fact that it offers some benefits.

Some of the benefits that have been shown include effectiveness in the treatment of pains, epilepsy, inflammation, skin problems, spasms, fearfulness, anxiety, rheumatoid arthritis, bacterial infections, parasitic infections, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), cancer, glaucoma, and nausea. The list can actually be longer than this.

A lot of research is on-going to confirm or disprove these claims and also to find out exactly how this compound works in the bodies of our pets. Regardless of the pessimism or disbelief with which many in the traditional medical community appear to view CBD for pets, pet owners who have had cause to use this treatment for their pets swear by it.

Thankfully, pet owners do not have to wait until the rest of the world finally accepts the benefits of CBD. With resources such as those offered by Petcbd community, pet owners can provide their pets with the much-needed relief and comfort in their times of pain.

Does it Have Side Effects?

This is one important question that any responsible pet owner should ask. We’ve known medications that treated one condition and then turned around to cause a more deadly one. Does CBD have any such side effects? No!

A few side effects have been noticed by pet owners after administering the oil to their pets. Some of these side effects include:

Drowsiness

This is understandable since it is used to treat anxiety. The pet can get calm and a bit drowsy. This will again depend on the dosage administered.

Dry Mouth

It is not yet clear what causes this but there is nothing serious about it other than the pet becoming more thirsty which can be taken care of with a good supply of drinking water.

Reduced Blood Pressure

This is another side effect that has been reported. The drop is however not anything major, though it can generally lead to light-headedness in the pet. The pet should just be made to rest.

Like we noted above, studies are still on-going but nothing serious has yet been discovered about this treatment. The only advice that one of the top researchers in this field gave is that the treatment should not be given to any pet that has a liver condition. The reason she gave for this is that it appears that the liver is responsible for metabolizing the compound.

Having noticed that alkaline phosphatase, a liver enzyme, increased when pets were given CBD treatment, she proposed that further studies be carried out on this to ensure that it was not indicative of a possible future liver failure resulting from the medication. You can read about her findings here: https://www.cnet.com/news/is-cbd-safe-for-pets/.

Once again, these are all conjectures that have yet to be substantiated by research-backed proof.

Conclusion

One conclusion that can be drawn from all we have looked at above is that CBD oil can offer our pets some medical benefits. That said, it is important that we seek professional guidance even as we seek to provide our pets with the best care.

Make use of the available resources to enable you to find out more about the product and how to effectively administer it. You should also ensure you get the right product because there are a lot of sub-standard ones on offer.
